Why this masterclass matters

The children on your caseload are not difficult. The clinical picture is often more layered than it first appears.

This session is designed for OTs who are working with autistic children whose presentations are complex, whose support teams are confused, and whose everyday function is not shifting in the way everyone had hoped.

The school-home gap is wide and everyone is interpreting it differently.

The child appears fine in one environment and falls apart in another. You need a framework that helps you ask better questions before committing to an interpretation.

Strategies are being used, but carryover is inconsistent.

Sometimes the strategy is not the problem. The missing piece is the larger picture around nervous system state, sensory load, masking and participation cost.

Families need explanations that reduce blame and build clarity.

When parents, educators and teams understand what the child is communicating, the intervention conversation changes.

You want a framework that still feels clinically grounded.

This masterclass brings together neuroscience, sensory processing, Polyvagal Theory, neuroaffirming practice and occupation in one usable clinical lens.

What you will learn

Clearer clinical reasoning you can use immediately

The focus is not on giving you more disconnected tips. It is on helping you interpret autistic presentations more fully and more confidently.

Illustration representing nervous system regulation and autonomic state

Understand autonomic state as a clinical read

Use Polyvagal Theory as a practical tool to think about safety, activation, shutdown and the full daily arc around the child.

Illustration representing the sensory systems used in clinical reasoning

Map sensory contributions with more depth

Think across the eight sensory systems, including interoception, and consider how different systems contribute to overload, seeking and participation restriction.

Illustration representing practical occupational therapy application

Move from interpretation to intervention

Strengthen the clinical reasoning that helps you understand why a strategy may work for one child, fail for another, or only work in one setting.

Illustration representing neurodiversity-affirming occupational therapy practice

Apply a neuroaffirming occupational lens

Communicate recommendations for autistic children in ways that support autonomy, trust, strengths and participation rather than compliance-based thinking.

Evidence base

What is the evidence base for The SenseUp Approach™?

The SenseUp Approach draws on three bodies of peer-reviewed research as its evidence base.

1

Ayres Sensory Integration®

First, and primary, is the Ayres Sensory Integration® literature, which is a substantial evidence base including randomised controlled trials, systematic reviews, and longitudinal studies spanning from Ayres' original work in the 1970s through to recent systematic reviews (Acuña et al., 2025; Schaaf et al., 2018).

2

Polyvagal theory, trauma and sensory processing

Second, The SenseUp Approach draws on Polyvagal Theory as a clinical lens, alongside research examining the relationship between trauma and sensory processing (Porges, 2022; Machingura et al., 2024).

3

Occupational science and occupation-centred practice

Third is occupational science and the WFOT's definition of occupational therapy, which grounds all four levels of the SenseUp Model 360™ in the evidence for occupation-centred practice.

The SenseUp Model™

In keeping with the three-pillar model of evidence-based practice, The SenseUp Approach also recognises practitioner expertise and client and family values as equally important pillars alongside research evidence.

The SenseUp Model™ integrates current research across neuroscience, sensory processing (all seven systems), trauma-informed care, and occupational participation into one systematic approach for challenges. This isn't about choosing between therapy approaches or sensory strategies - it's about seeing how nervous system safety can create a foundation for engagement, regulation and participation.

When you understand how these pieces connect, clinical reasoning becomes clearer and intervention planning honours what the child's body actually needs.

Case-based teaching

Meet Noah

Throughout the session, Kerry works through a running case study that carries the reasoning from nervous system state through to occupational participation.

Noah · 6 years old

A familiar presentation.

Bright, deeply feeling, and intensely interested in trains. Teacher reports no significant concerns. Family describe a very different child at home.

Autonomic picture

What does his nervous system appear to be doing at school, in community settings, and after the day is over?

Sensory picture

How are auditory, tactile and interoceptive experiences shaping his day and narrowing his margin for participation?

Relational picture

What has his nervous system learned about predictability, trust, masking and what is safe to communicate?

Participation picture

What does it cost him, and his family, when so much of his energy goes into coping and recovery?

Frequently asked questions

Questions about the Masterclasses and The SenseUp Approach™

1. Is The SenseUp Approach™ the same as Ayres Sensory Integration®?

No and it's important to understand the relationship clearly. Ayres Sensory Integration® (ASI) is the primary scientific knowledge base on which The SenseUp Approach™ is built. We begin with ASI theory, ASI research, and ASI principles because the evidence base that Jean Ayres and subsequent researchers have produced is robust and the best we have access to.

What The SenseUp Approach does is extend that ASI foundation into three areas that are not part of the original model: polyvagal theory and trauma-informed practice, the concept of the layered vulnerable nervous system, and an explicit occupation-centred and occupational justice lens. It is an approach that asks: what does every paediatric OT need to understand every child's nervous system and support their participation in the occupations that matter?

2. How does CASI differ from The SenseUp Approach Course (TSAC)?

The SenseUp Approach Course (TSAC) is a different kind of programme. Rather than certifying OTs in the delivery of a single, fidelity-based model, it provides a comprehensive clinical framework and professional development pathway for all paediatric OTs applicable across every caseload, every setting, and every client presentation. The two are complementary, not competing.

3. I'm already CASI-certified. Is The SenseUp Approach™ still relevant to me?

Absolutely and many OTs who have completed CASI have gone on to complete The SenseUp Approach™ as well. CASI gives you rigorous, fidelity-based practice in the ASI model. The SenseUp Approach extends that into the areas CASI was not designed to cover: trauma-informed clinical reasoning, polyvagal theory, the layered vulnerable nervous system, and an occupation-centred framework that applies to every child on your caseload not only those presenting with sensory integration difficulties.

For CASI-trained OTs, The SenseUp Approach often provides the clinical reasoning layer that makes existing ASI skills applicable to the more complex presentations they are increasingly seeing: children with disability, trauma histories, and layered neurodevelopmental challenges.

4. Is The SenseUp Approach™ only for OTs who work with children with sensory processing differences?

This is one of the most important questions we get asked and the answer is no. The SenseUp Approach™ is designed for every paediatric OT, for every child on their caseload.

Every child has a nervous system. Every child's capacity to participate in the occupations of daily life (dressing, eating, learning, playing, connecting) can be influenced by how their autonomic nervous system is functioning. That is true whether your client is autistic, has ADHD, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, a complex medical history, developmental coordination disorder, or any other presentation. The SenseUp Approach gives you the framework to understand and respond to what is happening in that child's nervous system, and to connect it directly to the occupations that matter to them and their family.

5. Do I need a sensory gym or specialised equipment to apply The SenseUp Approach™?

No. One of the core intentions behind The SenseUp Approach™ is that it is accessible in any paediatric practice setting of clinic, school, home, or community. While a sensory gym is a wonderful resource if you have one, the clinical reasoning framework, the assessment tools, and the intervention principles of The SenseUp Approach can all be applied wherever you work.

This is one of the meaningful differences between The SenseUp Approach™ and the CASI pathway: CASI requires a specialised sensory gym for ASI fidelity. The SenseUp Approach does not.

6. I'm fairly new to sensory integration. Is The SenseUp Approach™ the right starting point?

Yes. The SenseUp Approach Course (TSAC-Lite) is designed to take you from the foundations of nervous system science through to confident clinical reasoning across all five levels of the SenseUp Model 360™. You do not need prior sensory integration training to begin. The programme builds your understanding from the ground up, starting with the neuroscience of the autonomic nervous system and sensory systems, through sensory-motor integration, and all the way to occupational participation and self-determination.

Many of our students tell us it is the first time the science has truly clicked into place, and that it has changed not just what they do in the therapy room but how they think about every child they work with. They also say that what they learn is truly applicable for their very next session and they love embedding their learning into practice as they go.

7. I am an Allied Health Professional (AHP). Can I attend?

Absolutely. You are more than welcome to purchase a seat and attend any of our Masterclasses. While the training is structured primarily for occupational therapists, you may find a great deal of the content relevant to your own caseload, clinical reasoning and professional role.

Come and listen, consider the information through the lens of your own scope of practice, and take what you need from the session.

8. I am a parent or educator. Can I attend or ask questions in the Masterclass?

Unless a specific training event clearly states that educators and/or parents are invited, our professional Masterclasses are not the appropriate platform for individual sensory, occupational therapy or other clinical questions relating to a child.

You are, however, very welcome to contact our team at hello@senseup.org with a brief explanation of your query or challenge. One of our team members can help direct you to the most appropriate channel for support and/or further information related to your needs.

Please note that consultation fees may apply depending on the type of support required. Check in with the team first and we will see where we can help.

9. How do I access the recording after the masterclass?

Recording available in the Portal 48 hours after the session with estimated 30-day access. You will receive an email to help you log into the portal and set your password. If you missed the Masterclass, we'll also be selling a Recorded Version 48 hours after the event.

10. What if I can't attend live?

30-day recording access. We strongly recommend attending if possible.

11. Does the Portal and Recording Access Expire?

Your login will not expire, but your access to certain products may. Take note of the access notice during the purchase process. This information is displayed on the website and during checkout. We generally allow for 7-days to 30-days of access dependant on the specific offer, until content is moved. Refer to the offer for details about the replay access period.

12. I am having technical issues with login or the portal. What should I do?

Please contact hello@senseup.org. Try to share as much information about your problem as possible. Consider including screenshots of your challenge to help the team resolve your queries faster.

13. How do I get my Certificate of Attendance?

You need to (1) Attend or watch the Masterclasses and (2) Complete the Feedback Form - link available in your portal at the end of the Masterclass Series. The system will then send you an automated email with your certificate once complete.

Please ensure that your name and surname on the portal is correct - this will feature on your certificate.

What's next?

Ready to explore the full SenseUp Approach™ and SenseUp Model 360™?

If you attended the Masterclasses where we connect Sensory Integration, Polyvagal Theory, neuroscience and other frameworks to a specific sensory, diagnostic or occupational lens, and you want to explore and learn about the full approach and model, join us in the next cohort of The SenseUp Approach Course.

The TSAC Course is unique. While some topics may from time to time also be presented in Masterclasses, they differ from the in-depth lens and application in the TSAC course. A Masterclass covers a part of the concept and framework, while TSAC merges the entire model and underpinning frameworks together.

Masterclasses vs TSAC

  • Masterclasses focus deeply on a specific diagnostic, sensory or clinical lens.
  • TSAC integrates the full SenseUp Model 360™ and the frameworks underpinning it.
  • TSAC is designed for application across paediatric caseloads, settings and presentations.
